TWO-DAY SCHOOL IN NATURE FOR PRIMARY SCHOOL CHILDREN HELD IN PRELOG

Neither rain nor cold could prevent the two-day school in nature from taking place on September 17 and 18, 2022 in the Sports and Recreation Zone Prelog. Forty primary school children from Croatia and Hungary participated in two workshops dedicated to local flora and fauna, a workshop on navigating nature, a workshop on local culture, customs and beliefs related to the river Drava, and two sports activities.

In the beginning, the participants were greeted on behalf of the Town of Prelog by department head Miroslav Hržić. Then, Velimir Bašek and Antonio Krušelj from the Public Institution for Nature Protection of Međimurje County introduced the children to the most common types of birds that can be seen in Sports and Recreation Zone Prelog and different equipment used by birdwatchers. A real swan’s egg that could be touched and caressed attracted special attention.

Local myths and legends related to the river Drava were presented in a dynamic way by the director of the Library of the Town of Prelog Maja Lesinger. The river Drava monster Pesjanek visited the children and made a lot of friends.

The students explored the animate and inanimate nature of the Sports and Recreation Zone Prelog under the guidance of biologist Ivana Rojko from the public institution Nature of Međimurje, and were particularly impressed by the specimens of the dice snake they encountered.

Mihaela Mesarić Ph.D. showed children how to navigate nature using traditional as well as modern ways of orientation. They particularly enjoyed the boat ride and encountered many different species of birds.

In the end, the exercise was conducted by trainers with extensive experience in working with children, Mario Bauer and Damir Žegarac.
