FIFTH WORKSHOP ON LOCAL FLORA AND FAUNA HELD IN PRELOG

On Tuesday, October 11, 2022, a workshop on the flora and fauna of the river Drava banks was held in the Sports and Recreational Zone Prelog, led by Mišo Rašan, experienced biology and chemistry teacher and attended by 22 students from Prelog High School.

In the first part of the workshop, the teacher introduced the students to the plants and animals that can be found on the Drava islands, and the students learned the difference between flora and vegetation, what it means that a species is dominant in a certain area, about the importance of species diversity in a certain habitat and invasive species which threaten the river Drava and its banks.

The first part of the workshop ended with a group project where students chose topics and approached them as researchers. After a delicious lunch, the field part of the workshop followed, i.e. the group visited the Drava banks and islands and encountered a number of plant and animal species - reeds, several types of willows, pedunculate oak, poplar, black alder, wild cucumber, various types of insects and twenty species of birds.

This was the last of five workshops on local flora and fauna organized by the Town of Prelog and Marina Prelog d.o.o. The topic of the first workshop were the invertebrates that hide in the sediment of the river Drava, the second locusts, and the third and fourth local bird species.

In addition to Mišo Rašan, the students were taught by Luka Hercigonja, a nature photographer and member of the BIOM association, and about twenty students from primary and secondary schools participated in each one.
