STUDY TRIP TO AUSTRIA

STUDY TRIP TO AUSTRIA

The main goal of the AQUA ADVENTURES project is to improve the tourist offer on the lakes next to Prelog and Kistolmács. Following this, the Town of Prelog in cooperation with the Tourist Agency Insula from Prelog organized a two-day study trip to Austria on July 7 and 8, i.e. to Lake Neusiedl in Burgenland.

A group of 25 travelers from Croatia and Hungary familiarized themselves with good practices of continental and lake tourism, i.e. they explored Lake Neusiedl by boat, visited the picturesque town of Rust known for storks and the only wine academy in the world, visited the medieval fortress that overlooks the lake and beaches in Neusiedl am See and Podersdorf am See. They were also introduced to the rich local gastronomy, and on their return home they visited the palace of the Esterházy family in Fertőd, Hungary.

Interestingly, the average depth of Lake Neusiedl is only 1 meter, and the deepest point is only 1.8 meters. Although it is ten times larger than Lake Dubrava near Prelog, it almost dried up between 1867 and 1871. Due to evaporation, it has increased salinity, and part of the lake is covered by a national park that has been on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list since 2001. The lake significantly affects the climate of the surrounding area which is suitable for growing vine and fruit. Tourism is very developed.

In the end, the group did not hide their satisfaction with this study trip, determined to transfer the good practices they witnessed to their local communities as soon as possible. Another study trip to Austria organized by the municipality of Kistolmács is planned for fall.
